First and
foremost a community ensemble, the award-winning Main Band was formed in Harrogate,
North Yorkshire by the late Reg W Brown in 1976. The band consists of woodwind, brass
and percussion players of a range of ages (16 to 70+).
The emphasis is on music and friendship, while challenging everyone to
perform to the highest standard under the baton of Musical Director,
Ben Tierney.
Performances
are held at a variety of venues throughout the year, including outdoor
venues across the district in the summer months. The band regularly takes
part in competitive festivals. In 2006, the band achieved their first ever
Silver Award at national level. The challenge was to maintain silver status
at the national festival in 2007...and the band did more than meet the
challenge - they received their first ever Gold at national level!
The band has benefited from several musical directors over the years. 'The
White Rose' was commissioned by the White Rose Concert Band. It was written
by renowned composer Philip Sparke in memory of Bob Thompson who conducted
the band for several years.
